The causes of a wet basement

Water problems can happen even without heavy rain or obvious standing water. While it might be easy to see water coming through a crack in the floor or wall, the actual cause can sometimes be hidden. What's the real cause of your basement water problem?

When your basement is dug much of the surrounding dirt needs to be refilled. This means that the soil immediately around your basement (the excavated soil) isn't as dense and tightly packed as the rest of the soil. Since water prefers the path of least resistance, this means that water collects in this loose soil and eventually puts pressure on your foundation walls, potentially causing cracks and damage.

The more and more soaked the soil around your foundation becomes, the more it expands. The more your soil expands the more pressure it places on the nearby foundation. This causes cracks and eventually the water will work its way into the basement through any cracks or openings it can find. This even includes small openings and cracks around pipes or windows.
